November Outdoor Engagement Session at Notre Dame Campus – Emily and Tomas

After a busy Thanksgiving week it was a great treat to spend a holiday weekend afternoon out for a very leisurely engagement session with Emily and Tomas. Between an away football game day and Thanksgiving travels, Notre Dame University campus was unusually quiet this afternoon. Even with occasional wind gusts it was an unseasonably nice late November afternoon to start telling a wedding story with an Engagement Session.

I’m looking forward to their wintry wedding in December! Congrats, Soonly-weds!

Autumn Engagement Portraits at Notre Dame – Anne & Marty

This weekend kicks off my favorite season in Indiana – autumn! It’s also jam packed with great photo shoots, today’s celebrating Anne & Marty’s wedding at Notre Dame University’s Basilica of the Sacred heart, fun around town and a swinging reception at the Palais Royale Ballroom downtown!

Diamond Engagement and Wedding Rings – Location Macro Studio

One of the skills I’ve found essential to wedding photography is that of flexibility. I love the spontaneity of wedding day photography. Even if I’ve photographed in the same church and reception venue for brides with the same first name two days in a row (and did a few years back) it’s never the exact same day twice.

I’ve collected a case worth of camera gear and, shiny as it all is, I don’t keep lenses or accessories long if they are not getting regular use. Enter one of my favorites – 105mm f/2.8 macro. Great lightweight telephoto lens for portraits, wedding ceremony snaps, and of course macro close up photos. When a recent bride chalked out two hours for her and her bridesmaids to have hair and makeup done at the hotel I got the macro lens out for detail shots of some seriously shiny rings.

Here’s the setup, in vivid iPhone snapshot format.

Tricky thing with a telephoto macro lens – if you’re shooting straight on at your subject there’s not a lot of depth of field wide open. It takes a good deal of light to be able to stop down the aperture for more depth and still have a fast shutter speed for hand-held close-up shots. A large window and tons of diffused overcast light did the trick for lots of light. I saw the shiny black marble-esque window sill and knew it would make a sweet reflective surface to shoot on for a certain idea. Set up the rings and went to town. Here’s one of my favorites from the set of improvised macro photography setup.

Geeky gear specs: Nikon D700 with Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 Macro – exposure 1/20 second at f/45(!!) at ISO 800. Balanced on window sill and lens propped with the ring box lid & bathroom tissue – use what you have at hand!

Katie & Lawrence’s Snowy December Engagement Anniversary Portraits

Perfectly fitting snow day post. (Reports of nearly 2-3 feet of drifting snow in the last 24 hours here in South Bend!)

Just before Christmas Katie and Lawrence caught up with me for a sunny and snowy winter engagement session. Turns out the date was the 1-year anniversary of their engagement! In addition to the celebration it was also a perfectly mild winter afternoon to head out to some trails for great photos and good laughs along the way.

Congrats Soonlyweds! We’re loolking forward to your autumn celebration ahead!

Tyler & Dakota’s Winter Engagement Session

We wrapped up December and 2010 with two wintry engagement sessions before Christmas and 2011 arrived. Started the year’s finale with Tyler & Dakota on a bitter cold morning downtown. 9:00 am sounds like a good start until Indiana winter decides to blast you with icy wind! We ducked inside nearby buildings between gusts of wind for a mix of indoor and outdoor wintry engagement portraits.

Melissa & Jim’s Back to School IU Bloomington Engagement

What a great back to school weekend heading to the Indiana University campus in Bloomington, Indiana with Melissa and Jim.

We started off where the wedding story started when Jim asked Melissa to be his wife.

Melissa and Jim were into the fountain before I knew it, couldn’t blame them on such a sunny summer afternoon!

Lots of Cream and Crimson around the football stadium! We lucked out and walked right into the stadium and had live entertainment from a band camp on the field as we wrapped up the engagement session.

Congrats Melissa & Jim! We’re looking forward to joining your wedding celebration next summer!

Cubs Win! Wrigley Field Engagement Guest Book

I’m up late prepping for another double-shoot day this weekend, wrapping up 2 from Friday, ready to kick the weekend into high gear! Today’s celebration with Joy & David, here’s the first inning of the custom wedding guest book from a rather great proposal that might just make you shout “Holy cow!” Harry Caray style.

Proposal via Wrigley Field scoreboard? I’m as green as that scoreboard with envy!
