Laughter keeps you young – Hazel’s 90th Birthday

I’m no physician but I’m pretty sure laughing keeps you young. At Hazel’s birthday celebration last weekend there was a great amount of humor from her and the family. Even when family members apologized for laughing through most of the portraits I reminded them I’d rather have a laughing bunch than being stared down by an unhappy one any day!

Truth be told, the great sense of humor and abundance of laughs reminded me of my own family’s gatherings. I’m convinced great humor was part of how my Grandma Eleanor lived to be 96. Our family gatherings are full of chuckles, family stories and ornery jokes. Hazel’s party was nothing less!

Never Underestimate the Power of Grandma

The laughs continued into the evening portraits when the ladies decided to help the birthday girl not feel too self conscious about her height. Just before I hit the shutter release they all decided to shrink a little. Unscripted, but maybe rehearsed. Outtake? Given the family’s humor I’m thinking it’s a keeper!

Kodak Instamatic 104 – Monday Morning Redemption

My dad’s habit of finding quirky gifts strikes again. A crisp $1 bill got him this nifty Kodak Instamatic 104 Outfit box set at a garage sale. Sweet yellow Kodak box contains an Instamatic camera, unused flash cube, old AAA batteries and box from the last 126 cartridge that expired in May 1975 all stored inside. Now I’ve just got to find a 126 film cartridge to reload and get snapping with this camera!

The surprise gift just sucker-punched this sluggish Monday. It was his original find of a manual Minolta 35mm camera that got me hooked on photography way back in the teenage years. A Kodak Brownie Hawkeye, Agfa folding bellows camera, this Instamatic 104, and a handful of garage sale and auction treasures have been great surprise gifts since then!

Can’t wait to try out some Instamatic 35mm photos!

The Almost in Concert – Live Performance Photography

If you like our Facebook page these photos and more came across your feeds last November when The Almost were in town. Nothing like a good local basement venue show to get up close and personal to enjoy the music. The ~~girls~~ fans loved being feet away from lead singer Aaron and the band too, and I’m always a fan of free reign to shoot from wherever I prefer. Here’s a couple of favorite shots from Aaron Gillespie, former drummer of Underoath, and The Almost’s stop at Church of the Heartland in South Bend’s own River Park neighborhood.

Partly cloudy with a chance of brainstorms

Never know when ideas will strike like lightning in a summer thunderstorm. After a great meeting with two cool Soonlywed friends over coffee I tossed an idea out and a creative lightning storm hit as the groom-to-be totally one-upped my idea with something that… has given me chills brainstorming ideas the last two hours.

Free tips from today’s brainstorm -

If you have a camera, keep it nearby & shoot with it. (Phones count as long as you’re shooting something, anything, to keep ideas moving!)
If you have an idea, toss it out there to see who will take you up on it.
If they are game to do it, thank them.
If they improve upon it with something even more incredible, savor the moment as your realize it’s gonna be a fun shoot together
Get your running shoes and get to work.

Can’t wait to share more but I’m already thinking it’s gonna be a while for this idea to be in production.

And totally worth it.
