First Day of Kindergarten – Quinn

School is back in session, and Quinn is off to Kindergarten!

Wrapped up Summer Vacation with a Back to School / Off to Kindergarten session with Quinn. He was more excited for school to begin than for holding a sign board but he quickly warmed up to his new modeling gig. (The attitude for the camera from this guy! He’s ready for the stage and screen.)

Congrats, Quinn, and welcome Class Of (wait for it)… 2030!

Natural Light Children’s Portraits – Happy 1st Birthday Ayden

Mother and Son Outdoor Portraits

Sometimes my job behind the camera is a piece of cake. My clients’ ideas and translate into a creative energy, smiles abound, and it’s almost effortless. Like I said, a piece of cake. If anything, Quanay and her son Ayden made it a slice of 1st birthday cake when we met up for Ayden’s first birthday shoot.

Growing up is hard to do. I have a feeling once Ayden discovers that his birthday celebration includes cake he’s going to be just fine!

Summer Senior Portraits Session – Patience

natural light senior portraits idea for girls

Patience’s Senior Session landed a toasty August summer afternoon for her outdoor shoot. Plenty of natural smiles for natural light portraits on this sunny shoot!

My favorite photos are always the shots where you are being yourself. Comfortable, natural, unscripted – your photos will show exactly that. If that means picking a bouquet of wildflowers and modeling some Queen Anne’s lace in your outdoor shoot, do it! And, as always, don’t take yourself too seriously.

World Photography Day (Shutterbug Family Portraits)

Grab your gear. Go shoot.

The last day of summer vacation winds down as the exposure dials hit their limits and rolls of film wind back into canisters, the last of the instant film ejects, and a memory card is downloaded. Today was a naturally great day for making photos. Plenty to look back on as the summer concludes and the new school year approaches.

I loaded the last of my FujiFilm FP-3000B black & white instant film into the 1960s Polaroid Automatic 100.

My trusty Minolta X-370 was still working on a roll of Ilford Delta 3200 so I got to snapping with that too – through a 28mm, 50mm, and 135mm. Love those lightweight manual focus prime lenses.

Instagram would feel left out, so I threw it some photos of film gear and prints.

And then the brainstorms hit minutes before thunderstorms arrived, the kids and I took as much camera gear outside as I could remember where it was squirreled away, and set up a self-timer shoot to end the summer properly. Kodaks and Argus and Minoltas, oh my! Kodak Instamatic, a few One Touch Sx-70 Polaroids, Argus C4, 35mm Nikons from fully manual FM to fully auto N65, bags of accessories to boot.

Log Chapel Love Story – Elizabeth and Justin

On a sunny August afternoon on Notre Dame University campus, Elizabeth and Justin became husband and wife. They exchanged vows, shared tears of joy, and celebrated their union under the timbers of the Log Chapel.

Notre Dame Log Chapel Wedding Intimate Ceremony

It has always been and will always be an honor to tell a wedding story through my photography. One of the best compliments has been that I was unobtrusive and did not turn wedding photography into a “to do list” of shots and directing everyone around. I had a huge smile with the newlyweds told me that I was discrete in telling their story among the intimate settings of the Chapel and their private gathering.

Joy and David’s Swan Lake Summer Outdoor Wedding

We had a fabulous time with Joy and David, the Kroemer & Dulen families, and all their guests out at Swan Lake Country Club for a wonderful outdoor summer evening wedding celebration!

During their engagement session I heard a little more about their love story and how they met while serving in the Army in Iraq. For their wedding, David planned to wear his Army dress blue uniform and Joy’s father asked if she’d be wearing her kevlars. (It would have been a wedding first for us, but her beautiful bridal gown was very flattering!)

Swan Lake Outdoor Wedding Bride Enters

David is by far the most decorated serviceman I have met and photographed. As he greeted guests before the wedding more than once he described the many medals and awards from his 21+ years of service and travels in the US Army. His bride Joy also has quite a list of accomplishments both before and during the Army service.

The rain cleared up and the sun came out just in time for a sunny August evening outdoor wedding at Swan Lake Country Club. Not much better than beautiful weather to top off a wonderful day for wedding celebrations!

I’ve liked Chicago Cubs baseball since I was a little league infielder. After retirement David and Joy spent time following the Cubs’ season, including a proposal at Wrigley Field. If that didn’t make Cubs fans jealous, they entered the reception to a clip of Harry Caray’s famous “it might, be, it could be, it is! Cubs win! Cubs win!” followed by “Go Cubs Go!” – holy cow!

Joy and David switched up their first dance’s tempo with a lively dance mixed in their slow dance. Great way to kick off the party! The newlyweds had a great time celebrating the night away with family and friends.

Congrats newlyweds!

Great thanks to the great Vendors that helped in the celebration!

Joy & David’s Sunny Syracuse Summer Session

Hit the road last Friday and went to Syracuse, Indiana for Joy Kroemer & David Dulen’s engagement session along Lake Wawasee. Perfect evening for a little road trip and a lakeside engagement session with a fun couple!

Everybody look at the moon!

Half moon August night 2010

Nice clear August night sky for checking out the moon! The tomato plants have certainly helped find photo inspiration this week. Rather, walking out back to check on them and water them has crossed my paths with a few ideas. Spider at sunrise the other morning and a good glimpse at the moon tonight.

I got my tripod, camera and a telephoto lens and shot a guesstimated, underexposed frame as a reference point. Turns out it was one of the favorites right away. I made a nice tight crop, not too many pixels needed for the web version. I’d love to add a teleconverter and a longer lens for my next round of shooting the moon, but enjoyed snapping something for kicks before putting the kids in bed.

Geek specs: Nikon D300 body, Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR telephoto lens, exposed at ISO 100, 1/60th sec @ f/4. Crop in Lightroom.

Keep looking up, Stargazers!
